What is Cyber Essentials certification?

Cyber Essentials is the UK Government’s flagship cyber-security standard for small- and medium-sized businesses like yours. It is designed and overseen by the National Cyber Security Centre, part of GCHQ.

Becoming Cyber Essentials certified is ideal for your organisation if:

  • The rising cyber threat to SMEs leaves you worrying that you should be doing more to protect your business and your customers, but you’re unsure where to start
  • You’re concerned that a bespoke approach will be too expensive, too time consuming or too disruptive
  • You’re planning to apply for larger contracts and Cyber Essentials certification is a requirement
  • A partner in your upstream or downstream supply chain requires you to have it
  • You want to ensure your own business continuity by improving digital resilience

Cyber Essentials has been created as an affordable answer to all these concerns.

The measures prescribed by Cyber Essentials protect your organisation from the most common internet-borne cyber-security threats. UK government research shows that organisations with a Cyber Essentials certificate are 80% less likely to claim on a cyber insurance policy.

The scheme works.

Dalton Cyber offers a stress-free, all-inclusive solution. We'll guide you through the certification process, fully supporting you along the way.

THE BENCHMARK FOR DIGITAL RESILIENCE

Cyber Essentials comes in two levels

Cyber Essentials

You can complete a basic CE self-assessment yourself. You need to complete a technical 89-question questionnaire, available via the IASME website.

However, if you’re not used to going in-depth with software or hardware, or you’re simply too busy, we can support you by doing all the heavy lifting for you.

Following a short video call to understand your IT setup, we'll complete the assessment for you. This lets you get on with running your business.

Micro (1-9 employees): From £595*
Small (10-49 employees): From £695*
Medium (50-249): From £895*
Large (250+ employees): From £995*

*Excluding VAT

Cyber Essentials Plus

Cyber Essentials+ certification is a more rigorous, in-depth, process where the assessment needs to be carried out by an independent and accredited third party – that’s where we come in.

CE+ may be necessary for you if you need to comply with certain regulations or industry standards, but it will also make you look attractive to customers and suppliers if security is a top priority for them, or if you handle particularly sensitive data.

A CE+ assessment depends on the number and type of devices you have in your organisation. We will give you a final bespoke quote once we fully understand your requirements. Prices below include both a CE and CE+ certificate.

Micro (1-9 employees): From £1495*
Small (10-49 employees): From £1795*
Medium (50-249): From £2195*

Cyber Essentials FAQs

Everyone is a target. Smaller organisations often don't take their cyber-security defences seriously, which makes them low-hanging fruit for criminals. SMEs are considered 'softer targets'.

It's also worth remembering that you may not be anyone's particular target. Automated drive-by attacks delivered via the internet are rife, and they allow criminals to target the whole world simultaneously. They only have to get lucky a few times for it to pay off. It's like buying one lottery ticket but having a million chances to win.

Think of 'sensitive data' as anything you wouldn't want to be leaked into the public domain, or anything you couldn't operate your business without. What would your operations look like if you suddenly couldn't access ANY emails, ANY documents, ANY information in your customer database?

Cyber Essentials was designed for busy SMEs so it's relatively quick and simple to implement. After your initial consultation we can take all the heavy lifting off you, leaving you free to get on with running your business.

Cyber Essentials is like updating your electrical wiring. Nobody WANTS to pay for it, but we all recognise that old wiring can cause seriously expensive problems down the line, so it's best to stay on top of it.

Just think how much it would cost your business if you couldn't operate for a day. Or a week. Or a month.

Think also about what you spend similar amounts of money on in your business. How much do you pay your accountant? What's your marketing budget? How much do you spend on your Christmas party, training days, free coffee for staff? Shouldn't you also be spending a little bit of money on protecting your business from cyber criminals?

Your Cyber Essentials certificate expires after 12 months. The threat landscape evolves so quickly that it's important to ensure your systems are routinely checked for vulnerabilities.

The IT in your organisation is never static. It's an ever-evolving beast. New devices are added, new software installed, new updates applied. Even if it all looks the same from the outside, a lot can have changed under the bonnet.

Cyber Essentials certification isn't about becoming impervious. It's about minimising what we call the 'attack surface area' - all the parts in which your organisation is vulnerable. Government research has shown Cyber Essentials to reduce the likelihood of breaches by up to 80%.

Sure, a dedicated burglar will get into your house no matter what you do. That doesn't mean that you would leave your front door unlocked.

Almost 30,000 organisations were certified in the 12 months ending May 2023.

What's stopping you from becoming one of them?
